What Can Be Addressed With Facelift Surgery?

Your Facelift

Consultation

Your consultation plays an important role in your facelift process. Dr. Aaronson will evaluate the degree and areas of aging to determine the best facial enhancement technique for you. You will discuss your desires. Together, you and Dr. Aaronson will decide on a technique that best suits your needs and natural facial shape. During this time, you will also provide your medical history to ensure that you are healthy enough and a good candidate for facelift surgery.

Techniques

Facelift - Incisions are placed that run from the temples to inside the ears and around the back of the ears into the area discreetly within the posterior hairline. A facelift will address both the deeper superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) and the surface skin.

  • The drooping facial muscles are lifted vertically and secured with internal sutures.
  • The sagging tissue is removed, and the remaining skin is positioned to enhance the facial contours.
  • The fat may be repositioned around the cheeks to achieve natural volume.

Neck Lift - An incision is placed on the underside of the chin, through which the sagging muscles and excess skin are treated.

  • The platysma muscles are tightened to reduce the appearance of a flabby "turkey wattle."
  • Excess skin is removed, and the remaining tissue is draped to highlight the graceful line of the neck.
  • Fat removal may be necessary to treat a fatty neck appearance.

Combining Procedures

Facial aging doesn’t always occur in just one area of the face. Since facelift surgery is designed to correct the lower part of your face, combining other facial enhancement procedures may be necessary to achieve a totally rejuvenated appearance. Eyelid surgery and/or a brow lift may be necessary to treat the upper areas of your face. Laser resurfacing may be performed during or following your surgery to help smooth wrinkles and fine lines of the face. The goal is to achieve even and natural facial rejuvenation from the forehead down to the neck.

Concerns

You will experience bruising and swelling following your surgery. You should plan to stay overnight at the Aaronson Plastic Surgery Center, where you will be overseen by a private duty nurse. Most patients return to work within two weeks of their procedure and can resume regular physical activity after four weeks.
The extent of your scarring depends on the extent of your incisions. Additionally, your body’s natural healing process will play a role in scar formation and appearance. Discuss your concerns with Dr. Aaronson during your consultation if you are worried about scar formation. Most scarring will fade over time.
The cost of your facelift will vary depending on a number of factors. The technique used, surgical and anesthesia fees, and the extent of correction will all affect the final cost of your procedure. While cost can be an important factor when choosing a surgeon, it shouldn’t be the only factor. Choosing a qualified, board-certified surgeon is necessary for achieving natural, beautiful results.
There may be some initial postoperative discomfort that is the result of stretched tissue. This pain may be controlled using an oral pain medication prescribed by your doctor. For most patients, this initial pain subsides within several days of surgery.

Because a facelift is a surgical procedure, it is important that patients prepare themselves two weeks before undergoing their surgery. This involves stopping the use of cigarettes and alcohol as well as discontinuing certain medications or supplements. Also, it is crucial to have a recovery plan; have someone ready to care for you after your procedure, and pick up all medications beforehand.
Facelift surgery can remove anywhere between five and 10 years from your appearance. Most patients achieve long-lasting facial rejuvenation. However, surgery cannot prevent additional aging from occurring. Routine, non-surgical treatments can be used to help maintain the quality of your results.
